The Richard Sanders Show vol. 1

Available from: richardsandersmagic.com (There are also demos of some tricks available on the site.)

Volume one of the Richard Sanders Show is full of great magic. The effects included can be accomplished without difficult sleight of hand, which is a definate plus for me. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this DVD, and am going to begin including a couple of the effects in my aresenal.

I do have a couple gripes, however they’re very minor. First of all, you’re going to need some gimmicks for a couple of the tricks. It’s nothing horrible, and you’ve probably got the required gimmicks already. Even if you don’t, $10 and a couple minutes at the magic shop will get you squared away. It’s really a non-issue, but it’s something I wish I had known when I bought it.

Secondly, the descriptions of a couple of the effects are a bit misleading, at least to me. They imply a sense of impromptuness that really isn’t there. It’s not a “borrow a deck and do it” situation. However, the setup is very minimal and the tricks are excellent, so it’s probably another one of those non-issues.

So now that I’ve warned you about things you probably didn’t need to be warned about, on to the effects! You’ll have to go to the website and read the descriptions for yourself. I’m just going to give you my take on them.

Named: I like this one a lot. It feels sort of like Paul Harris’s Backlash, but not really. The effects are totally different, but the handling feels similar. It’s hard to explain, but definately worth doing.

Double Bill Switch: I like how this looks, but I’ll probably never perform it. It’s a good effect though. You can actually borrow the bill, and it does actually change twice. Everything is open and fair, and you’re clean at the end.

Behind My Back: I don’t really like this one. I think it’s too simple, and that an audience will see right through it. I may change my mind if and when I actually decide to perform it, but based on what I’ve seen I’m not a fan.

Gobsmack Pack: I absolutely love this. You’ll probably be able to figure it out from the demo (Maybe, I haven’t seen the demo. But I did immediately know how it was done after watching the full performance on the DVD.), but it’s an excellent trick. You’ll need to spend some time creating the trick, but after you do it once, you’re set for life. I can see this hitting hard for a lay audience.

SynchronACEity: This is decent. Nothing earth shattering, and an intelligent spectator may be able to work backwards and figure it out, but it’s decent.

Pile of Change: I love the thought behind this one! The blurb given is absolutely 100% true, no matter how hard that is to believe. The downside? You need balls to do this. Big brass ones.

Cramped: I like this one. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it, but I like it. I can definately see potential.

Magic Marker: This is clever, although I can guarantee I’ll never set up the marker. Why? I don’t know. I just won’t. Although it’s a killer effect, so if you buy the DVD, you should take the time to make it.
